Every year, men take part in Movember, which involves growing out one’s moustache for the entirety of November in support of men’s health issues. However, few are familiar with Decembeard, the process of growing out one’s entire beard for December, also in the name of charity.
This year Decembeard aims to raise awareness for those affected by bowel cancer (you can donate here). If you’ve never grown out a beard before, this could be the perfect month to start. Here are just a reasons why December is the ideal month for beard growth.
It’s getting colder
Now that the temperature is dropping, you’ll want that extra fuzz to keep your cheeks warm. Beards are nature’s insulation – Scientists believe men kept onto them originally to give them that extra layer of protection when hunting. They’re much nicer than having to wear a facemask to stay warm.
There are deals on beard grooming kits
With Christmas around the corner, now is the best time to find deals on beard grooming kits. Male grooming sets are being advertised everywhere. If you want to grow out a beard, but don’t want it to look unkempt, you could save money on styling your beard by getting involved this month.
You can decorate your beard
For getting into the festive spirit, why not grow a beard and decorate it up like a Christmas tree? There are lots of beard decoration products on the market including beard baubles and beard tinsel. You can’t grow a beard and wear baubles any other month because it would look silly (although some may argue that putting baubles in your beard during any time of the year is still silly).
Your workplace may be more sympathetic
Some workplaces have strict rules when it comes to growing facial hair – an employer may ask that you take time off work to grow your beard out as the stubble period could look unprofessional. In December, such companies may be a little more relaxed leading up to Christmas, plus if you tell them you’re doing it for a charity cause, they may be more sympathetic. Even if they put their foot down and say you can’t grow a beard, many companies are likely to have a week off over the Christmas period, giving you some time to try and grow a beard.
You can make a more convincing Santa
If you’re dressing up as Santa this year, you’ll look a lot more convincing with a real beard than a fake fancy-dress job. If a kid tries to yank on your beard, you’ll be able to rest self-assured that it’s not going to come off. There are white Santa beard dyes out there that are perfect for getting in character.
