Last Saturday, as England mourned the loss of their beloved team from the Rugby World Cup, there was an altogether more hairy World Championships taking place in the picturesque village of Leogang – just outside Salzburg in Austria.
At the World Beard and Moustache Championships, over 350 of the globe’s hairiest men battled it out in 18 categories to be voted 2015’s ultimate bearded or moustached champion.
The biennial event sees the gathering of facial hair from all over the world and though it’s perceived as a social gathering of old friends, there was a healthy air of rivalry as the event kicked off on Saturday morning.
Now trust me, judging a beard competition isn’t easy by any means and the task ahead was daunting. The quality of facial hair was astounding and the brief was strict- this was a finely tuned Austrian/German operation. For almost 11 hours 7 judges (myself included) pondered and deliberated the fate of these gloriously bearded contestants.
Once the results were announced and the prizes awarded, the sound of cow bells were drowned out by the festivities in the beard tent as celebrations continued late into the night. What a day – but more importantly what a show! If facial hair is your thing, this was the one date that should have been in your beard diary.
The 2017 World Beard Championships will take place in Austin, Texas organised by the Austin Facial Hair Club. If you have the hair (and the fare) we’ll most likely see you in USA.
